"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We need no new revelations.

3. EMPHASIS ON EXPERIENCE OVER TRUTH:

"To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them" (Isaiah 8:20)

THE NEW APOSTOLIC REFORMATION, WORD OF FAITH, AND HYPER-CHARISMATIC MOVEMENTS

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables" (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

THE NEW APOSTOLIC REFORMATION (NAR)

"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:11-12)

THE ERROR:

The New Apostolic Reformation teaches that God is restoring the offices of apostle and prophet to the church today, with these "new apostles" having authority equal to or greater than Scripture. This movement promotes extrabiblical revelation, false prophecies, Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare, dominion theology (Seven Mountain Mandate), and the belief that the church must establish God's kingdom on earth before Christ returns.

NAR teaches that modern apostles and prophets are essential for the church to reach maturity and fulfill its mission. These self-proclaimed apostles claim direct revelation from God, authority over regions and nations, and the power to bind territorial spirits. The Seven Mountain Mandate teaches that Christians must take dominion over seven spheres of society (religion, family, education, government, media, arts/entertainment, and business) before Christ can return.

BIBLICAL REFUTATION:

The foundation of the church was laid once for all by the apostles and prophets, with Christ as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). The apostolic office required having seen the risen Christ (Acts 1:21-22; 1 Corinthians 9:1) and was confirmed by signs, wonders, and miracles (2 Corinthians 12:12; Hebrews 2:3-4). These qualifications cannot be met today.

The Canon of Scripture is complete and sufficient: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We need no new revelation beyond what has been delivered "once unto the saints" (Jude 3).

Christ's kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36), and we are not called to establish earthly dominion but to preach the gospel: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).

PROMINENT NAR LEADERS TO AVOID:

BILL JOHNSON

(Bethel Church, Redding, CA) - Teaches that Jesus laid aside His divinity, promotes "grave soaking" (lying on graves of dead revivalists to receive their anointing), and encourages the pursuit of signs and wonders over sound doctrine. Johnson's theology denies the hypostatic union (that Christ is fully God and fully man) and promotes mystical practices that border on necromancy. His church is a training ground for false prophets and miracle-seekers.

MIKE BICKLE

(International House of Prayer - IHOP, Kansas City)

Promotes contemplative mysticism, claimed direct revelations from angels, advocates 24/7 prayer and worship as a means to usher in Christ's return, and teaches Latter Rain theology. Bickle's movement emphasizes experiences, visions, and prophetic words over Scripture, creating an environment ripe for deception.

LOU ENGLE

(The Call)

Known for convening mass prayer gatherings based on prophetic words and dreams; promotes political dominionism and the Seven Mountain Mandate; partners with Roman Catholics in ecumenical compromise. Engle's ministry blurs the lines between politics and gospel, teaching that social transformation is the primary goal of Christianity.

CINDY JACOBS

While producing popular worship songs, this ministry is an extension of Bethel Church's NAR theology. Their songs often contain subtle theological errors and promote experience-based spirituality over Scripture. Many churches unwittingly adopt NAR theology by singing Bethel worship songs.

HILLSONG

An international megachurch movement that promotes prosperity theology, worldly entertainment-style worship, ecumenical compromise, and has been marked by numerous scandals and doctrinal deviations. Hillsong represents the seeker-sensitive, entertainment-driven church model that sacrifices truth for numbers.

"For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:13-14)

THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL

(WORD OF FAITH MOVEMENT)

"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows" (1 Timothy 6:10)

THE ERROR:

Also known as the "Health and Wealth Gospel" or "Name It and Claim It," this teaching asserts that God wants all believers to be financially prosperous and physically healthy. Proponents teach that faith is a force that can be used to manipulate God, that poverty and sickness are always signs of weak faith or sin, and that generous giving to their ministries guarantees financial returns ("seed faith").

This movement teaches that believers are "little gods" who can speak things into existence, that Jesus became sin and had to be "born again" in hell, and that material prosperity is proof of God's favor. It turns Christianity into a cosmic vending machine where the right "faith confessions" produce desired results.

BIBLICAL REFUTATION:

Jesus never promised earthly riches to His followers. Indeed, He warned: "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" (Matthew 16:24). The apostles endured poverty, persecution, and suffering: "Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace" (1 Corinthians 4:11).

Paul rebukes this teaching: "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content" (1 Timothy 6:6-8). True riches are spiritual, not material: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth...But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:19-20).

The prosperity gospel presents "another Jesus" and "another gospel" (2 Corinthians 11:4; Galatians 1:6-9). It makes God subservient to man's desires and treats faith as a formula for getting wealth rather than trusting God's sovereign will.

PROMINENT WORD OF FAITH FALSE TEACHERS:

KENNETH COPELAND

Extreme prosperity teaching; claims believers are "little gods"; teaches that Jesus died spiritually and was "born again" in hell; lives extravagant lifestyle funded by ministry donations. Copeland has amassed enormous wealth while teaching that poverty is a curse and that Christians should be rich. His teachings on the nature of Christ and the atonement are blatantly heretical.

JOYCE MEYER

Prosperity gospel teacher; lives in luxury while teaching "seed faith" giving; teaches Word of Faith heresies including that Jesus went to hell and was "born again." Meyer's ministry has made her one of the wealthiest religious figures in America while her followers send in "seed offerings" expecting miraculous financial returns.

JOEL OSTEEN

Avoids preaching on sin, repentance, or judgment; focuses on self-help and positive thinking rather than the gospel; extremely wealthy pastor of America's largest church. Osteen's "your best life now" theology promises earthly happiness and success while ignoring eternal judgment and the need for repentance.

CREFLO DOLLAR

Teaches extreme prosperity doctrine; asked followers to fund a $65 million private jet; promotes Word of Faith theology that equates faith with material wealth. Dollar's very name is a testimony to his gospel: it's all about money.

BENNY HINN

Famous for "miracle crusades" with staged healings; teaches prosperity doctrine and Word of Faith heresies; lives lavishly while soliciting donations from poor followers. Hinn has been exposed numerous times for fake healings and financial impropriety, yet continues his lucrative ministry.

T.D. JAKES

Modalist

(denies the Trinity);

prosperity teacher; promotes self-help psychology over biblical doctrine. Jakes' denial of the Trinity places him outside Christian orthodoxy, yet he is embraced by many evangelicals due to his popularity and influence.

Hyper-charismatic churches prioritize feelings, experiences, and manifestations over sound doctrine. They create emotionally manipulative environments where people are pressured to demonstrate "spiritual power" through strange behaviors. This movement has led to mass deception as people mistake emotional manipulation and group psychology for the work of the Holy Spirit.

BIBLICAL REFUTATION:

Scripture commands order in worship: "Let all things be done decently and in order" (1 Corinthians 14:40). The fruit of the Spirit is "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance" (Galatians 5:22-23) - not chaos, disorder, or bizarre physical manifestations.

Paul teaches that not all speak in tongues (1 Corinthians 12:30), and that tongues without interpretation are forbidden in public worship (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). The Holy Spirit never causes behavior that violates Scripture or brings dishonor to Christ.

True worship is "in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24), not in emotional frenzy or manufactured experiences. It prioritizes cultural acceptance over biblical faithfulness and treats the gospel as primarily about social transformation rather than personal salvation from sin.

BIBLICAL REFUTATION:

The focus shifts from God's glory to man's comfort, from truth to technique, from worship to entertainment.

Seeker-sensitive churches conduct marketing research to determine what will attract crowds, then design services around consumer preferences rather than biblical mandates. Preaching is replaced with motivational talks, worship becomes entertainment, and the gospel is reduced to therapeutic messages about self-improvement and happiness.

BIBLICAL REFUTATION:

The church is called to preach "the whole counsel of God" (Acts 20:27), not a diluted gospel designed to avoid offense. Paul declared: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth" (Romans 1:16).

True church growth comes through faithful preaching of the Word: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). We must not compromise truth to gain numbers: "Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets" (Luke 6:26).

The cross is inherently offensive to the natural man: "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18). We must not remove the offense: "And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased" (Galatians 5:11).

CHARACTERISTICS OF SEEKER-SENSITIVE ERROR:

Ecumenical movements teach that doctrinal differences don't matter, that we should focus on "what unites us" rather than truth, and that all who name Christ (regardless of their gospel) should unite. This leads to partnership with Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and even non-Christian religions in pursuit of social goals or false unity.

BIBLICAL REFUTATION:

Scripture is clear: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). Jesus is the only mediator: "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5) - not Mary or saints.

The bread and wine of communion are symbolic, not literally transformed: "This do in remembrance of me" (Luke 22:19). There is no biblical support for purgatory; Christ's sacrifice was complete: "It is finished" (John 19:30).

This teaching claims that the Church has permanently replaced Israel in God's plan, that God has no future purpose for ethnic Israel, and that Old Testament promises to Israel are now fulfilled spiritually in the Church. This often leads to anti-Semitism and a diminished view of biblical prophecy.

Replacement Theology teaches that Israel's rejection of Christ resulted in permanent disinheritance, that "true Israel" is now the Church (composed of believing Jews and Gentiles), and that God's covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are now fulfilled in a non-literal, spiritual way through the Church.

BIBLICAL REFUTATION:

Paul explicitly denies this teaching: "I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid...God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew" (Romans 11:1-2). Israel's hardening is partial and temporary: "Blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved" (Romans 11:25-26).

God's covenant with Abraham is unconditional and eternal: "And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant" (Genesis 17:7). While Gentile believers are grafted into the olive tree (Romans 11:17-24), this does not nullify God's promises to Israel.

God is not finished with Israel: "For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob" (Romans 11:25-26).

A CALL TO BIBLICAL DISCERNMENT

"Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3)

The proliferation of false gospels in our day is a fulfillment of prophetic warning. Yet we must not despair. The true gospel remains "the power of God unto salvation" (Romans 1:16). We are called to:

1. KNOW THE SCRIPTURES: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15)

2. TEST ALL TEACHING: "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1)

3. HOLD FAST THE TRUTH: "Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 1:13)

4. SEPARATE FROM ERROR: "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple" (Romans 16:17-18)

5. PROCLAIM THE TRUE GOSPEL: "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine" (2 Timothy 4:2)

THE MARKS OF FALSE TEACHERS:

"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you" (2 Peter 2:1-3)

  • False teachers are marked by:

  • • Denying essential doctrines about Christ

  • • Leading many astray with appealing but false teaching

  • • Financial greed and exploitation of followers

  • • Claiming special revelation or authority beyond Scripture

  • • Promoting experience over truth

  • • Refusing accountability when proven wrong

  • • Living in luxury while followers suffer

THE TRUE GOSPEL

In contrast to all false gospels, the true gospel is gloriously simple and sufficient:

"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16)

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9)

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us"

(Romans 5:8)

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9)

THE SUFFICIENCY OF CHRIST:

Christ's work is complete. His sacrifice is sufficient. His Word is final. We need:

  • • No new apostles or prophets

  • • No additional revelation beyond Scripture

  • • No human mediators (Mary, saints, priests)

  • • No works to supplement His grace

  • • No mystical experiences to validate our faith

  • • No earthly prosperity to prove His favor

  • • No signs and wonders to confirm the gospel

"But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God...For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified" (Hebrews 10:12, 14)

STAND FIRM IN THE FAITH:

"Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong" (1 Corinthians 16:13)

"Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle" (2 Thessalonians 2:15)

"Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel" (Philippians 1:27)

FINAL EXHORTATION:

This is the gospel we proclaim, defend, and for which we contend. May God grant His church discernment, courage, and faithfulness in these last days.

"Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you" (2 Corinthians 13:11)

"Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen" (Jude 24-25)

"The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen" (Revelation 22:21)
