The Prophetic Shield: Rick Joyner (MorningStar Ministries)

Rick Joyner: Embracing the Supernatural

In this video, leaders from the MorningStar circle discuss the necessity of pursuing signs and wonders and the supernatural works of God, often echoing Joyner's long-standing defense of the "strange" manifestations as essential for a church awakening.

If Randy Clark was the Mechanic and Bill Johnson the Architect, Rick Joyner was the Prophetic Guardian. He provided the "visionary" framework that allowed the Toronto Blessing to be seen not as a disorderly event, but as a strategic "civil war" within the church.

The Connection: Validating the "Strange Fire"

Rick Joyner was already a leader in the "Kansas City Prophets" circle when the Toronto Blessing broke out. He was one of the first major voices to travel to the Toronto Airport Vineyard to lend it "prophetic" credibility.

  • The Public Defense: Through his influential MorningStar Prophetic Bulletins, Joyner argued that the bizarre manifestations (barking, jerking, and laughter) were "God’s strange works."

  • The "Civil War" Prophecy: Joyner famously prophesied a "coming spiritual civil war" between "Blues" (prophetic/spiritual people) and "Grays" (intellectual/religious people). This effectively labeled any critic of the Toronto Blessing as a "Gray" who was resisting the Holy Spirit.

  • The Shielding of Manifestations: By framing the Toronto experience as a "new move of God" that the "old wineskin" church couldn't handle, he provided a shield that prevented congregants from testing the spirits according to 1 John 4:1.

The Result: The "Knighthood" and the Elite Seers

Joyner moved the "River" experience into a military and elite context, making the "Toronto DNA" feel like a high-level spiritual special forces unit.

  • The Order of St. John: Joyner claimed to be "knighted" and associated his ministry with the "Knights of Malta," introducing a bizarre mix of chivalry, military imagery, and elite "seer" status into the movement.

  • The Restoration of Todd Bentley: After Todd Bentley’s moral collapse (adultery and divorce) following the Lakeland Revival, Joyner took it upon himself to "restore" Bentley. He used his prophetic authority to bypass traditional church discipline, eventually relaunching Bentley’s ministry.

  • The Kansas City Legacy: He successfully fused the Toronto "impartation" model with the Kansas City "prophetic revelation" model, creating a hybrid theology where leaders have secret, direct information from God that cannot be questioned by the "intellectual" church.

Negative Impact Analysis

1. The Weaponization of "Religious Spirit"

Joyner is largely responsible for the popularity of the term "Religious Spirit." In his theology, anyone using logic, biblical cross-referencing, or historical orthodoxy to question the movement is labeled as being under a demonic influence. This effectively silences all internal accountability.

2. The Shift to "Extra-Biblical" Revelation

Under Joyner’s influence, the "River" became a gateway for "Seers" who claimed literal visits from angels and deceased saints (like his claims of talking to the "spirit" of the Apostle Paul). This shifted the movement from being about the Bible to being above the Bible.

3. The Failure of Accountability

His decision to "restore" Todd Bentley despite ongoing concerns about Bentley’s conduct showed the world that in the "Prophetic" world, power and "anointing" matter more than character and biblical qualifications for eldership (1 Timothy 3).

"Hidden in Plain Sight: The Oracle"

In the "Hidden in Plain Sight" framework, Rick Joyner represents the Oracle. In mythology, the Oracle speaks in riddles and visions that the "average" person cannot understand, requiring a special class of priests to interpret.

By using the Messenger (Iris) motif to suggest he is just delivering "Heavenly Bulletins," Joyner masks the reality: he is the Guardian of the Gate. If you want the "Toronto anointing," you must accept his "Prophetic visions." The "Rainbow Bridge" in Joyner's world is a military checkpoint—only those who "align" with the new prophets are allowed to cross. He has turned the simple "Blessing" into a Prophetic Eliteism that excludes anyone who values biblical sobriety over ecstatic vision.
